Review

This book is quite touching and entertaining. It is straightforward with simple prose that makes the book easy to read. The respect and admiration that the author feels towards Kavika (as well as the other canines in the pack) is readily apparent.

"Kavika: Tales of a Timber Wolf" is not solely about wolf dogs however, as there is quite a bit of discussion about the author's other canine companions and how they fit into the pack. As a result, readers looking for a story solely about wolves and wolf dogs might be disappointed. On the other hand, people who have dogs and are considering adding a wolf dog might be particularly interested in reading about Kavika's interaction with the other dogs.

There are definitely books better suited as detailed references about the required care, socialization and training of wolf dogs. "Kavika: Tales of a Timber Wolf" provides a glimpse into life with a wolf dog as a member of the pack, rather than being a reference on wolf dog ownership. The book does touch on practical issues such as wolf content, terminology, making sure you are aware of the legal status of wolf dogs where you live, and a bit about feeding and containment. However, it is more a celebration of the unique nature of Kavika and the dedication it takes to share your life with a complex creature such as a wolf dog. It is touching and sometimes humorous, yet does manage to make excellent points about what it takes to care for a wolf dog. The author's anecdotes about repeated fence improvements are entertaining while at the same time illustrating that an average fence isn't likely to contain a wolf dog for long.

Conclusion

"Kavika: Tales of a Timber Wolf" is a quick enjoyable read suitable for anyone. If you are considering adding a wolf dog to your pack, it is a good way to get a glimpse into the trials, tribulations, and joy of living with a wolf dog. In addition, any animal lover will likely enjoy the story for its celebration of the human-animal bond.
