There is a concern among reptile owners regarding obstructed reptiles and impaction of their pets due to reptile bedding. These common reptile diseases are valid concerns but impaction and an obstruction can be easily prevented if the proper steps are taken.
Types of Bedding
There are plenty of different types of substrates available to keep your reptile comfortable, but depending on where your reptile eats, some bedding choices are better than others.
If your reptile eats where he lives, and isn't moved to an empty container just for feeding time, a sand, almond shell, or other small grain bedding is less than ideal. These are the kinds of substrates that are easy for your reptile to get a mouth full of while eating. Larger, heavier substrates, or flat surfaces are best for reptiles who are prone to eating their bedding, whether by mistake or not.
Feeding Location
Take your reptile out of their regular enclosure for feeding time. Place them in a container with paper towels, newspaper, carpet, or nothing at all, and it will be impossible for them to become impacted with bedding while eating.
If your reptile eats pre-packaged diets, try putting the food in a dish where bedding cannot cause a problem.
Hydration
Depending on the type of reptile, your pet may need regular water soaks, fruits to eat, water misting, high humidity, or just a big bowl of water to drink. All of these things are important in hydrating your reptile and keeping them from becoming obstructed or constipated. Make sure you know your reptile's hydration requirements.
