Question: How Is RHD Spread?
Answer: The virus that causes RHD (rabbit hemorrhagic disease) is very contagious and the virus can also survive for long periods in the environment. Direct contact between rabbits is only one possible meand of transmission. RHD can be spread by:
  • direct contact with infected rabbits or feces of infected rabbits.
  • contact with objects contaminated with the virus such as feeders, bedding, cages, clothing, and shoes.
  • contact with rabbit products including fur, wool, and meat.
  • contact with flies, rodents and other animals that have come in contact with the virus.
  • contact with humans that have been in contact with the virus, either from handling infected rabbits or contaminated objects.
The greatest risk of transmission is any place where rabbits are brought together in close quarters, such as shows, sales, flea markets, and auctions.
