While people’s definitions can vary, exotic pets are typically categorized as anything that is not a cat, dog, or domesticated farm animal. And if you’re considering bringing home an exotic pet of your own, you’re probably thinking about the perfect name for your animal. But sometimes choosing a name isn’t so easy. Some people decide to name their pet based on its appearance, such as Pepper for a black bunny. And others decide to go with a name that alludes to species traits, such as Pirate for a water-dwelling animal. If you’re still looking for the right name, here are some superb exotic pet names that start with the letter P.

Tips for Naming Your Exotic Pet

It’s OK to take your time when settling on the perfect name for your exotic pet. It won’t hurt your animal’s feelings to be unnamed for a little while. Some exotic pets, such as mice and hamsters, only live for a few years on average. But others, such as parrots and tortoises, can live for several decades with the proper care. So you’ll want to select a name that you’ll be happy with over the course of your animal’s entire lifespan. Granted not every animal will end up learning and responding to its name. But changing an animal’s name can still be a hassle when it comes to vet records and other information.

Aim to select a name that you will be comfortable sharing with family, friends, and your veterinary clinic. If you think hearing a particular name called in the vet’s waiting room would be embarrassing, it’s probably not the right name for your pet. If you’re lacking ideas, observe your animal in the days after you bring it home to find a truly fitting name. Wait for its temperament to start to shine through. In addition to naming based on its appearance, you might want to name based on a personality trait, such as Prissy for an animal that's particularly fussy about its food or environment.
