Minnesota, the land of 10,000 lakes, and quite the list of exotics vets as well. There are some veterinarians who will treat any type of pet, while others only treat one or two. Even exotics vets are selective with what species they will, and can, treat. Extra training is required for most vets to be capable of treating exotics appropriately. Many species cannot tolerate the same drugs as cats and dogs and not all vets know this.
Be sure to call the exotics vet closest to you to first see if they will treat the species you have. Some vets may say they see exotics but only pocket pets, birds and reptiles. The more unusual and larger the pet you have, the harder it will be to find a vet who is capable of treating it. Even if you don't need a vet right now, it's good to know who and where you will go if you have an emergency.
