The Bottom Line

Though I like the simplicity and price point of this cage, I found the the cage has a few major problems, and I would not recommend it. It is also on on the small side for rats and guinea pigs (for which it is labelled).

Guide Review - All Living Things 24 Inch Rat and Small Animal Cage

I purchased this cage when I needed to separate my rats due to injuries and illnesses. Though labelled as a rat cage, and also recommended for guinea pigs, it is really too small for housing these animals, especially considering both are best kept in pairs or groups. Though I think it was spacious enough to house a singe rat as a "hospital" cage, as long term housing it is cramped for one rat and definitely too small for more than one. It is definitely too small for guinea pigs.

The cage was relatively easy to assemble; the panels were folded down in the book and are simply unfolded and kind of hooked together. Unfortunately, I find the little hooks that are meant to hold the sides of the cage together do not work well and even after I tried to crimp them so they would be more secure, they sometimes come apart when I remove the cage from the tray for cleaning. The clips that hold the top of the cage to the tray are also a bit loose and inconsistent. However, the worse part is the door - I cannot get the door to stay reliably closed (I use a bolt clip -- the kind at the end of a dog leash -- to keep the door closed).

The pan of this cage is quite shallow. If your pet likes to kick or push out bedding this cage would be messy. I do like that the design is so simple though - it makes the cage easy to clean.

I've also found a couple of the cage welds came loose after only a couple of months. Overall, I was not impressed with the construction of this cage; perhaps I was just unlucky and got a bad cage, but I would not buy another of this brand.
