Cedar and pine shavings are no longer recommended as bedding for small pets; fortunately many alternatives have become available. Kaytee Total Comfort is one that is soft and does the job; however, I found it a bit dusty and not as good at odor control and absorbency as some other options.

Pros

  • Relatively inexpensive.
  • Average absorbency.
  • Average odor control.
  • Soft texture.
  • Quite readily available.

Cons

  • Dusty.
  • Dark grey (not very attractive).

Bottom Line

Kaytee Total Comfort Bedding is an economical choice for small animals such as hamsters, gerbils, mice and rats, and some owners really like it. However, I found that its absorbency and odor control were just average, and I ended up using more bedding and changing it a bit more frequently than other beddings (sometimes low cost isn't all it seems). I also found it very dusty, and wouldn't choose this bedding again.

Comments

Kaytee Total Comofort is a decent alternative to cedar and pine, though I think there are better options available. It is fairly economical and is nice and soft, but I found the odor control lacking and it was quite dusty. To be fair, I have read that the dust problem has been improved, though I haven't tried the bedding again, and my sneezy rat tolerated this bedding well (the dust seemed confined to the bottom of the cage, at least).
