Cedar and pine shavings are no longer recommended as bedding for small pets; fortunately many alternatives have become available. Cell-Sorb Plus is a good alternative; it is not the softest or most attractive bedding but it does the job, isn't very dusty, and has a good price point.

Pros

  • Relatively inexpensive compared to some other beddings
  • Quite readily available at pet stores.
  • Good absorbency
  • Good odor control
  • Heavy enough that it is hard for pets to kick out of the cage.
  • Available in a couple of sizes including large quantities.

  • Grey rough texture; not very attractive.
  • Heavy.

Bottom Line

Cell-Sorb Plus bedding is a good choice for small animals such as hamsters, gerbils, mice and rats. It is fairly economical among the paper based products, and it is absorbent and does a pretty good job of odor control. It's heaviness can be a disadvantage in bigger cages but does make it hard for pets to scatter out of the cage. My sneezy rat tolerated Cell-Sorb quite well.

Comments

Cell-Sorb Plus is a good alternative especially for those with lots of pets since it is more economical that some other beddings. Because it is quite absorbent, you may be able to stretch the time between changing bedding a bit, too. Personally, I prefer some other bedding brands but among the commonly found alternatives this is a well-priced option and I would use it again.
