Step Two in Training a Ferret to Shake a Paw

Added on Dec 8 2007

The second step of training this ferret to shake a paw requires a subtle change. The treat is still held in a closed hand, but now the other hand is held open just underneath the closed hand. The ferret still reaches for the treat in the closed hand, but sometimes hits the open hand with its paw. The trainer wants the ferret to touch the open hand with its paw; this action is accidental at first, and the ferret gets a treat for touching either hand. The key here is proceeding with baby steps: if you ask too much of your ferret at one time, your ferret will likely get frustrated and bored. At first a treat is given for anything close to the desired behavior, and as the ferret catches on, a bit more specific action is required before giving a treat.
