Step One in Training a Ferret to Shake a Paw

This cute little fellow is learning how to shake a paw ("give a paw"), with a creative trainer that does a great job of showing how to shape a desired behavior in a series of videos. In the first step, the owner holds a treat in a closed fist, and the ferret naturally tries to "dig" the treat out. The key action here is that the ferret gets a treat for lifting his paw up; holding the treat so the ferret has to dig at it is the lure to get the ferret to use its paw. Now it is a matter of teaching the ferret to refine this very basic step and do the action on cue, in order to do the trick "shake a paw."
