Provide a Safe Environment

Have a look at where your pet lives and make sure safety is foremost. Make sure any bedding used is safe and appropriate for your pet, and avoid the use of cedar wood chips for bedding. If you use heaters, make sure your pet cannot be burned (use wire covers on heat lamps for example; don't use hot rocks). If you use an exercise wheel, choose a solid surface wheel with no cross supports. Make sure cages are out of drafts and away from heat and air-conditioning vents. Be very cautious with the use of chemicals to clean in an around cages - in most cases plain very hot water is best. If cleaners are used, they must be rinsed away very well (cleaners should never be used around amphibians). Choose safe plants, both in your home and in terrariums, if applicable. If your pets have playtime out of the cage, make sure the room is safe, particularly with respect to things such as electrical cords (especially for pets such as rabbits and ferrets). Be extra careful around holidays if you put extra decorations around the home.
