Exploring Exotic Pet Rescue

Exotic pet rescue is not as popular of an idea as dog and cat rescue is, so sometimes a little thinking outside of the box is involved when searching for an exotic pet to rescue. On the other hand, finding an exotic pet to adopt from a reputable breeder can also be difficult and many people don't think about rescue organizations as a place to find their new exotic pet. But nonetheless, with a little persistence, and like dogs and cats, exotic pets can be found at local rescue groups.

Is Rescuing Right for You?

If you are looking for a very young animal it is not likely you will find one at a rescue organization. Occasionally animals will give birth while in the care of a rescue group so babies will be available, but adults or special needs pets are usually what you will find. Decide what you are looking for in a new exotic pet and go from there. If you have your heart set on a baby, your best bet will be to go to a reputable breeder instead.

There are many things to do and consider before rescuing an exotic pet but by being prepared ahead of time you will prevent a great deal of stress.

Choose a Species

Groups are typically limited to one type of animal species. For example, ferret rescue groups only rescue and adopt out ferrets. They may take in the occasional mink because of the two species' similarities, but ferrets are what they really specialize in. Most states will have at least one rescue group for the particular exotic pet you are interested in.

Make Sure it's Legal!

Just because you can buy it doesn't mean you should. Every state has regulations for exotic pets. Before going through the adoption process, especially through an out-of-state organization, be sure to check with your state about what animal species are legal to own. If the pet you want is illegal in your state, you could have a major problem with finding a veterinarian to treat it. And it will no doubt eventually need to be seen!

Ask a Local Exotics Veterinarian

Not sure where to start your search? Many exotic pet veterinarians work with local exotic pet rescue groups. They may be able to offer some suggestions, and you can start to build a relationship with a local exotic animal hospital.

Search the Internet

Obviously. The Internet is a wealth of knowledge. Try searching your state and the type of animal you are looking for, followed by the word "rescue." For example, searching "Ohio ferret rescue" will result in a list of rescues for ferret rescue organizations in Ohio.

Question the Organization

Ask the rescue group if you can visit their facility. Is it clean? Are they providing proper veterinary attention for the animals in their care? Do they have volunteers and/or fosters to provide the needed attention and enrichment to the animals while waiting for their new home? If the answer to any of these questions is no, and they don't have a good reason not to be able to say yes, then move on.

Is it Healthy?

Exotic pets can be surrendered to a rescue group for a number of reasons, but pets are often given up due to an illness that the previous owner could no longer treat. Make sure you know the pet's history before signing any adoption forms. Many pets need homes because they require special care or medications. These medications can be costly, but the reward of saving a life is more than worth it. Be prepared, and know what you are getting into before making a commitment.

Research the Process

Most organizations have an adoption process. Applications, fees, and caging/housing requirements must be completed before choosing a new exotic pet. Make sure you know what is needed to care for the pet of your choice before applying. Don't rely on the group to completely educate you (although they usually have a plethora of information available). You may be rejected the pet of your choice if you do not fulfill their requirements, or prove that you know how to properly care for the animal.

Prepare Your Home

The rescue group may request a home visit to be sure you are ready to adopt. Have all equipment, enclosures and other necessities together before applying for an exotic pet. Also, in addition to pleasing the group, your new exotic pet will be relieved to have a less stressful homecoming when everything is in its place.

Rescuing an exotic pet gives you a sense of achievement. Some owners don't realize what they are getting into when they adopt an exotic pet and therefore end up relinquishing it to a rescue organization. By adopting a formerly unwanted exotic, you are giving them a new life, one that may have been prematurely taken away from them instead. And they more than return the favor with their companionship and intrigue.
