Jungle Bobs

Jungle Bob Cats

By , About.com Guide

Bred to resemble bobcats, Jungle Bobs are known for their exotic looks and large housecat size.

Breed Origins

Jungle Bobs were created by crossing the Chausie with the Pixie-Bob. Some breeders use only the wild cats from the original two breeds (the Jungle Cat and bobcats) to produce Jungle Bobs. Whether or not leaving out the percentage of domestic cat that is in both the Chausie and the Pixie-Bob makes them more tame has not been recorded.

About Jungle Bobs

These cats can weigh in at over 20 pounds, have ear tips like bobcats, have stripes and spots like Jungle Cats and bobcats, and may or may not have tails.

Since bobcats have small nubs for tails and Jungle Cats have long tails, some kittens come out with a nub, others a long tail, and others still with a tail somewhere in between. Some breeders boast that their Jungle Bobs have more prominent ear tip hair which makes them resemble bobcats and others boast about how large their cats get.

Breeders claim they are affectionate but still not for everyone. Their markings and tail lengths vary since they are not a pure breed but that hasn't stopped them from becoming popular.

Jungle Bob Skeptics

There are skeptics out there that don't believe bobcats will readily breed with domestic cats or Jungle Cats, but the cat community still holds claim to the bobcat crossbreeds. More testing has recently become available to determine the parentage of cats but no testing is yet available to see if a cat is part bobcat. Until then, cat shows are getting more and more registrations for bobcat mixes and other hybrid cat breeds all claiming to be Pixie-Bobs, demonstrating their rise in popularity.
