My little boy came to live with me, because I was working at a Humane Society and he came in having been ababndoned in an apartment with a cat. Nobody could get past the fact that he was a rat, or that his teeth were severely malocclused and overgrown (they had even deformed his face somewhat, and for a long time he was unable to close his mouth) to take him home. He was there over a month, and I became quite attached to him - so, of course, he came home to me (and my fiance warmed up to him).
It took many months of trimming to get his teeth into shape (and to fit into his mouth), however, he was never able to eat hard food. He had free reign of our (rat-proofed) apartment, and took over my fiance's slippers as his second favourite bed (when he couldn't fall asleep with his head in your palm).
He was one of the most snuggly, loving and intelligent pets I've had. Sadly, he passed away less than a year after he came into my life, primarily due an abdominal tumour. I would like his story to be a reminder of how important proper care and attention is for all animals - there is no one who is too small to matter.
