Sometimes you just need to give your pet a bit of time before settling on a name for them. Your animal certainly won’t mind being without a name for a little while. Some exotic pets, such as certain small rodents and fish, only live for a few years on average in captivity. But others, including large parrots and tortoises, can live for decades. So you’ll want to pick a name that you’ll be happy with for all the years you have your animal. Yes, most animals can adjust to a name change. But it still can be a hassle to alter a name on vet records and other information midway through their life.

It’s also important that you select a name you’ll be comfortable sharing with family members and friends, as well as hearing called in your veterinarian’s waiting room.
