Fire bellied newts in a bag of water

The Newts being acclimated to our tank (still in the bag of water from the store).

Lianne McLeod
These are the newts when they first came home. They are still in their platic bag of water from the pet store, which is submerged in our tank for the acclimation process.

The process of acclimation is the same as for fish: first the sealed bag is submerged for about 10 minutes allow the temperature to equalize. Then, water from the home tank is added to the bag (1 cup at a time) to allow adjustment to the water in the tank, waiting 5-10 minutes between each addition. After 2-3 additions, scoop the newts out into the tank and discard the water.
