What is an Exotic Pet?
The definition of an exotic pet varies a lot depending on the context. Here at About, exotic pets are everything except dogs, cats, fish and horses. The term exotic (which is often used to describe something that is foreign, or something different or unusual) isn't perhaps the best term to describe some of the pets included on this site. However, this is a common usage of the term exotic pets, mostly because it is a convenient catch-all phrase used to decribe "non-traditional" pets.

- Salmonella - Risk from Reptiles - There may be health risks for you or your family from the pet you are considering. For an example, reptiles commonly carry Salmonella bacteria. Most of these health risks are minimal or preventable with good hygiene, but be aware of the risks.
