Isn't the Spay or Neuter Surgery Risky for My Rabbit?

by Lianne McLeod, DVM

Question: Isn't the Spay or Neuter Surgery Risky for My Rabbit?
Answer: Rabbits do require some special treatment when having surgery, so it is a very good idea to find a veterinarian who is experienced in the treatmenat and surgery of rabbits. If you find a vet who is experienced with rabbits, the surgery is very safe and the benefits far outweigh the risks.

When Routine Spays and Neuters Should Not be Done
If your rabbit is suffering from some unrelated health problem or is obese, surgery is a risk. Treat any diseases or underlying conditions before having your rabbit spayed or neutered.

What if I can't Find an Experienced Rabbit Vet?
If you cannot find an vet who does lots of rabbit surgery, your decision is a bit tougher, but I still think in the majority of cases the benefits of spaying and neutering outweigh the risks if you do your best to at least find a vet that understands the special care that rabbits need before, during and after surgery.
