There are around a dozen or so guinea pig breeds that exist, but you will probably only see about half of those in the pet stores.
The most common guinea pig breeds are the American (which has short, straight hair), Abyssinian (cowlicks or whorls everywhere), Peruvian (long straight hair), and Crested (one cowlick on the top of the head). What breed to you want or have?

When we were very poor, I sent my husband out on Christmas Eve to buy a game everyone could play. He brought back two American Guinea pigs. I loved them. Still do. But sad to say a couple years later and 38 more of them and I had to get rid of them as I was the only one playing!
