Red-Spotted Ferrets

By January 22, 2010

No, ferrets don't come in a red-spotted variety, but they can develop tiny red lesions that can mean bad news for your pet.

It is common to find these small, red, sometimes ulcerated mast cell tumors in the superficial layer of a ferret's skin. Sometimes they itch at them, causing them to bleed and then scab over.

If you notice any small lesions, don't waste any time. Make an appointment with your veterinarian. If they are indeed mast cell tumors, which are a type of cancer, they should be surgically removed or frozen with cryosurgery.
