Guinea Pig Breed Guide

Friday February 20, 2009
guinea pigletsDid you know there are several breeds of guinea pigs? Actually, the array of breeds, varieties and colors of guinea pigs is quite vast and confusing. Of course, unless you are showing your piggies, the actual breed doesn't matter that much in terms of whether your guinea pig will be a good pet. The biggest concern for most pet guinea pig owners is whether you want a short haired or long haired variety (i.e. whether you want to spend a lot of time grooming), and many of the guinea pigs found in pets stores and shelters will be crosses. But anyway, I have put together a guide to breeds with the help of several caviaries who generously donated photos for the guide. The photos here represent some of the thirteen breeds currently recognized by the American Cavy Breeders Association. Breed clubs in other countries may recognize a different group of breeds which generally adds to the confusion. Some of the breeds are quite amazing when in full show condition! To see some wonderful photos of guinea pigs, visit the "Guinea Pig Breed Guide".

Hey there, I’m trying to put a breed to both of my guinea pigs. The female looks like she’s a show breed please email me and I will send you pictures of both male and female. And you can put a breed to them please and thanks. (I know they’re both short haired)

I have always gotten 2 syrian hamsters, and they have always gotten along beautiful. My first 2 girls Emma & Audrey, I got in college and they always slept together, when 1 got up to get a drink or nibble the other followed. They lived to the ages of 4 and 41/2 years old.
I currently have 2 syrian females and they too get along great, as long as you have a big cage and 2 exercise wheels, and 2 separate sleep places, they do fine– my girls always cuddle together.
