Who Will Care for Your Pets When You are Gone?

Sunday December 28, 2008
I'm not trying to be gloomy -- I know this is one of those topics that no one wants to think about, just like writing a will. But, like writing a will, this is something we should all consider. I am not a lawyer and I obviously can't offer legal advice, but the topic of who will care for your pets if you should pass away is complicated and it is definitely an area you should discuss with your lawyer. You lawyer may advise you to put your wishes in writing in your will. You can also discuss with your lawyer other options that are out there, such as a document like the Pets Letter of Wishes from ItsMyLife.com (the Pets Letter of Wishes is free until February of 2009; you can also find out more about the Pets Letter of Wishes here). Since some of our pets are on the "non-traditional" side, this question of who will take them on can get tricky, and some exotic pets (such as turtles) can reasonably be expected to outlive their owners. So, as much as none of us want to think about the possibility, as responsible owners we should make sure we have plans in place for our pets, just in case.
