How Did You Name Your Turtles?

In our continuing series on pet names, let's talk about turtle names. There are lots of great turtle names in the turtle names list I started before, but I'm always interested in how people chose their names. Did you have names picked out before you got your turtle? Or did you wait to see what your turtles were like before settling on a name? Please share your turtles' names by adding them to the comments section below. Feel free to note how you chose names too! Eventually, I hope to find time to compile all these names to update the master list of Turtle Names, too.

We have an Eastern Box Turtle, that my daughter named Rocky. Beacuse when he is in his shell he looks like a rock.
My girl red-eared slider is named Gorgonzola because I love blue cheese!
and my 2 boy RES are Bumpy - because he has a bump on his back and Gamera (an obvious choice for those who know Japanese “Horror” movies)!
Well, I love turtles. We have currently 5 RES with the following names: StarDust, Comet, Amanda, Bing & Bang. Before We have four (4) Malaysian Box Turtles, we named them Innie, Mini, Miny, Moe and later donate them to a local zoo and we were given free entrance for the entire year. We named the turtles inaccording to their behaviour and character. We observed them for one month before giving them names.

I named my RES Bandit, because when I caught him/her (still too little to tell the sex) It looked almost like a bandana across his/her face. It just stayed with him. Right now, I am also comptimplating purchasing a Sulcata Tortoise, which I have already chosen “littlefoot”. Her back feet are so tiny right now, like the size of pencil erasers, and she looks like something off the movie “Land Before Time”.

I named my snapping turtle smeagle because
he eats his fish just like goloum did in the lord of the rings movies and my box turtle is named froto also from LOTR the names fit them both
My wife is mostly responsible for naming the six RES we have. They are, in declining order of age, Elvis, Milo, Otis, Timon, Pumba and Rosita. Elvis is about 10 years old and Rosita is about 1 year old.
my turtles names are bonnie(yellowbelly)….clyde (missippi map)…simon(painted) and we have a new addition a baby map who is nameless at the moment thats why im reading this article……bonnie n clyde(self explanatory) have always been kept together since youngins and its quite obvious to the eye clydes a boy n bonnies a girl ….simon painted turtle is named after an old show called simon that no one remembers (hello my name is simon and i like to do drawings he had an english accent) does anyone remember??? my sister n i do…..he just looks like a simon to me teehee so its too early to tell if the new map is a boy or a girl they say u can tell by the tail male is larger than female tail but i dont have 2 to compare
my boyfriend has three turtles, two are yellow bellies and Im not quite sure what the 3rd one is but it has spikes down its shell. The biggest one weve got who is about 5 inches long is called Bruce Murtle because the person we got him off had already called him bruce and i liked murtle so we put the two together. We still havent got names for the other two yet because we just got them
My first turtle was named Lucky, the reason for this was that he was lucky that my dogs didnt get to him before i did. He was a box turtle and i found him in my yard in texas. My second one is a african spurred tortise, and her name is Gracie, i named her as my husband was describing her to me, she is a wonerful tortise and she truly is graceful.
I have 3 turtles and 3 tortoises. My favorite turtle I have had for 8 years, he is a painted box. His name is Baxter, because I loved that cat food commercial for Meow Mix and the guys cat’s name was Baxter. My other painted box is a female and she is named Shell and the third turtle I have is a res and she is named Jax after a video game my son loves.
My tortoises are Danny, ‘cuz that’s who gave him to me, I also have Kentucky and Karren. Both were given to me by my girlfriend Karren when she visited Kentucky. The are yellow foot and red foot tortoises.
I have a site I am creating for Turtle Haven Rescue. Some of the schools around here give me their turtles for the summer and pick them back up for the school year.
I have built a huge pond for them, this summer it will expand again for my tortoise area….. gotta love ‘em
we have finally named the other two turtles. The little yellow belly is calle Franklin Murtle afte franklin the turtle and the mississippi map is called Cecil Murtle after the turtle who apeared in bugs bunny
We named our turtle, Wasabi.
Not only is it green, but we passed an Asian resturant at the time we got him, and it said “Wasabi” over a green sign…Hee Hee…
I just got a diamond back terrapin and named him Pineapple because his shell looks like a mini pineapple. Our other turtle’s name (a red eared slider)is Snapple.
I named one of my turtles, Crash, because I found it by the side of the road hurt. Crash is great today, but still has the damage to it’s shell. Little No Fear was named because he was/is not scared of anything.
i have two RES. Im hopefully going to get another soon. I named one Rocko and one Double D for Darrell Donatello.
I think Ill name the third one Uncle Fester or Cousin It

My Red eared sliders name is Tiny Rex
Named Tee by my 11 yr. old (well 11 at the time), short for Turtle.
Named Redy by my 7 yr. old, because of the red stripes on his ears, and the one red dot at the top of his head. Red eared slider turtle.
My two sons each have a red eared slider turtle. One is named Redy, for the red dot in the center, top of his head, the other turtle is named Tee, short for Lil Turtle Tony.
i named my 2 turtles crush and squirt like the 2 off finding nemo

I named my male red eared slider claude because I wanted to give him a name that I thought is rare
I have two Yellow belly Turtles one is called Squirt of course from Nemo and the other one is caled Speedy cuz he is really fast.There so cute!!!
Spencer, got my RES, from a British couple. he loves to cuddle & play with my Toy Poodle.

My first turtle was Bowser
My second Was Dumb
My third was a baby between Bowser & Dumb, Lily
and my last is Flint
I have 5 red eared sliders and there names are buba buster brownie muddie and my smallest cheddar
i have a pair of red- eared sliders, their names dont match but their names are Philip and Princess
I HAVE 2 RES, NAMED STARR SHE IS 12YRS OLD.. AN SNOOP IS 9YRS OLD.. AND TRUST I LOVE MY KIDS.. THEIR THE DAUGHTERS I NEVER HAD.
I thought I would add my turtles name because I didn’t see a anyone on here who named their turtle “Jumbo”.
I have a red eared slider who i had sence he was about an inch in diameter and he’s not even a year old yet but is growing like a weed, my friend and I named him Humphry and he’s the most spoiled turtle I know of. He’s not that big but he has everything i turtle wants and more hehe
I have two ornate box turtles (Tutti and Frutti), and two new RES (Nano and Pico) I know they should grow a lot, but for now they really are small. The other two I got when I was a kid and I can’t remember how I came up with the names

I named my turtle Attila. because he was mean and fought the other turtles.
We have a desert tortoise named “HENRY SKIPPERDEE O-SLOW-A”….I (mommy) picked Henry because he just looked like a Henry…my daughter picked Skipperdee because she saw liked it from a movie. And my husband came up with O-slow-a for obvious reasons (albeit false being that He’s quite fast).
We also have an African Spur Tortoise who is HUGE (approx. 50-60 lbs) and her name is BIG MAMA!!
We love both of them just as much as dog owners love their pets!!
i had several names picked out for my two red eared sliders i got a boy and a girl i had two sets of names picked out this first was Bill and Carolyn named for the two turtle mascots for comcast buti settled on Sonic for the boy and Shadow for the girl named for the sega characters i know shadow is a boy hedgehog but a female named sonic just doesnt cut it other possibilites were Rainy Turtloid, squirtle i even considered the Crush and Squirt pairing in keeping with the Finding Nemo theme.
I have three turtle. I did have four, but one passed away. The one that passed away was named Adionus. My other three are named, Ikarus, Bam-b, and Stanley. I loves them!!
i got my turtle a few years ago..he was probably 4-5 when i got him his name then was stewart..since then his name has been shortened and been renamed stu..cause everyone loves turtle stu!!
We named ours McGumbo (pronounced “mugumbo”)
I don’t realy know why, it just blurted out one day, and that was it.
twenty years later, it has gone through many variations, but we still call him “Micky G” affectionatly. he is the best friend we’ve ever had.
We named our Red Earred Slider ‘Tuck’ after the Red Earred Slider ‘Turtle Tuck’ on the Wonder Pets show.
I named my red ear slider Flash… for two reasons really, I am absolutely obsessed with the show dukes of hazzard, and the dog’s name was flash. my other reason is because he has those stripes he looks like he is really fast, and speedy was too cliche
My turtles name is Obi Wan Shelkenobi. He is a turtle on the “good side of THE FORCE” He doesn’t carry a light saber but he is FULL JEDI !!
I have a read eared slider, he’s about two years old my boyfriend and I named him pedro from the movie napolian dynomite, due to his funny personality after we got him.

I named my three-toed box turtle Maija-Ayashe (my-uh I-ah-shee). We call her ‘Yashe or Maya for short. I made it up, and everyone tells me it sounds like it should be the name of some African queen: feminine, distinctive, and strong. I kind of felt that about the name, too; and it suits her, because when she was a hatchling she was black as the night sky but with the most beautiful sparkling bright (huge) eyes. She definitely stood out among her brothers/sisters. She was also very demanding about getting her food - she used to nip at their legs to get to “her” food. lol She is a little queen.
I also had a male whom I named Naobi, but he passed as a result of his mealworms maturing into beetles and eating him alive. No joke - be careful about leaving those mealworms in the enclosure!
My turtle names are freckles cause he came with some white freckles on his back and Gandhi cause one he made a hunger strike.

My son and I have a Russian Tortoise, which my son named “Jaws”. I used to love to watch my sister’s Desert Tortoises, “Alexander” and then “Oscar” eat lettuce.
My baby boy-turtle’s name is MACHO because he is not scared of us unlike his little baby girl friend who is so cute to look at that i named her CUTIE.. but she is very shy.
I have a sulcata tortoise I named Abbot. It reminds me of a kids story about a monk that was a mouse. I figured it being an old living animal id give it a strong old name… I think of old man when I hear its name kinda like my tortoise
i just got a new turtle and i named him Kelmer because it was a joke nickname of mine between me and m family

I named my turtle razor because I got him from a knife salesman. I also bought a straight razor from the guy so I decided that I would call my male red ear slider that as well.
I have a river cooter named mr. Mcdurdle the yurdle turtle previous owner named it that although it is to small to tell if it is a male or female. I call it mr. Mcdurdle

Our red slider, Henry the eighth(has a marking on her rear next to her tail looks like a number
has laid an egg. As far as I know she has never mated. Heck, we thought she was a boy. So I’m a little surprized.
My turtle’s name is going to be Fred-Rick. I love it.

We had our box turtles for over 14 years and thier names were Waldo And Rosie
my boyfriend and i just bought a 6 month old RES whos 2 young 2 tell the sex, and have called him rex as in t-rex coz he reminds my boyfriend of a dinosaur . hez the newest addition 2 our 4 mice (milo,otis,spots&nibbles), guppies (fish- bonnie&clyde + their babies) and his mums toy poodle lilly . we love him and are getting a buddy 4 him 2mrw
My turtle is named Skipper!
I recently got my tutle, i found her in a school so i picked her up and brought her home, ever scince i have been feeding her bread, wich she loves, lettuce, and carrots, we named her bubbles because she loves to be in the water,some other good names for a turtle is for a girl: jewls, saphire, gold, silver, ruby,lilly,flower, cici, peaches, trina,shalila,titi,nini,kiki, cheeks, cheer, sprinle, cupcake for a boy: bob, jj, wrinkle, joe, jim, sonic, tommy,bubble,and tinkle
We just recently got a turtle that is mine and my little sisters and we named it Tuck from the Wonder Pets… its really cute
my kids got out red eared gliders as a present and when we got thom, one was fast and the other one didn’t move much at all…they named them Fast and Furios and slow moe
Me and my girlfriend got a red eared slider before we left the beach and named him sea monster. He is growing up now and we love him to death great addition to the family
Our family named our turtle “TT” due to all of us having the same iniatials for our names. He belongs to all of us and now he will always feel closer to us.
I named my RES ‘Curtis’. Curtis the turtle has a nice ring to it but my friends and I took to calling him ‘Kurtis Blow’ after a legendary hip-hop artist. So the name kind of stuck now.
