How Did You Name Your Rabbits?

Monday October 13, 2008
photo of a rabbit named speckyIn our continuing series on pet names, let's talk about rabbit names. There are lots of great rabbit names in the rabbit names list I started before, but I'm always interested in how people chose their names. Did you have names picked out before you got your bunnies? Or did you wait to see what your bunnies were like before settling on a name? I had a rabbit called Specky, a name thought up by one of our kids -- though it was a puzzling choice because he was pretty much all black. Still, the name seemed to fit him somehow, and it stuck. How did you name your rabbits? Please share your rabbits' names by adding them to the comments section below. Feel free to note how you chose names too! Eventually, I hope to find time to compile all these names to update the master list of Rabbit Names, too.

And on the topic of names, About.com Guide to Christianity, Mary Fairchild, has a neat feature about Bible Pet Names. What I like is the way Mary talks about the origins and meanings of the names and ideas for the kind of pet they might fit, and you might find some naming inspiration here.

I have named all my rabbits after lagomorph diseases. It started with Tula(Tularemia)because we actually thought I had contracted Tularemia from her, then Niki (E. Cuniculi), Fella (Francisella tularensis)Tula’s namesake, and Cheyle (Cheyletiella). And yes, I am a vet tech. Aren’t we the weird ones?

(5) Anne says:

My son named our rabbits, and both were literary references. The first was Basil Stag Hare, after the very british bunny in Redwall. The second is Blackberry, after the rabbit in Watership Down who could figure out how “man” things worked, like boats. He also is an English Spot, white with black markings that look like berries! Works on two levels!

My rabbit was named by my brother as he gave it to me for my birthday. He named it Sanchez as in Dirty Sanchez as it eats it’s own poo! But as it is a girl I usually call it Chezzles. But if I want it to come to me I have to call Sanchez. We get some very stange looks when we take her our and people aske the name and why it is called this. But I love her and wouldn’t give her up for anything as she now sleeps with me and grunts with happiness every time I come home.
