How Did You Name Your Snake?

Monday October 6, 2008
ball python pictureThis time, lets look at snake names. There are lots of great snake names in the snake names list I started before, but I'm always interested in how people chose their names. Did you have names picked out before you got your snakes? Or did you wait to see what your snakes were like before settling on a name? Please share your snakes' names by adding them to the comments section below. Feel free to note how you chose names too! Eventually, I hope to find time to compile all these names to update the master list of Snake Names, too. Let's keep it to snakes here; each week I'll start a new post for different kinds of pets. So let's get by sharing names for snakes here!

(1) Scottie says:

Well, most of the time their name comes to mind on the way home.

My first snake is Archie, a red corn snake.
Suzy Q was named Charley by the rescue. didn’t think it fit her. She is a Boa constrictor.
Our last three are named after the towns they were purchased in, Lodi, Eugene, Florance.
A white corn snake we got was being called Mr. White. While at a educational event a group of girls changed his name to Manfred.
We adopted a Ball Python. His name was Canary because of the amount of yellow he had. Well, he got out and we could not find him. So I played the hand of fate and got another Ball Python and named him C too (Canary 2). Low and behold we found Canary at the bottom of the stairs the following week.

I mostly pick names I like. Some are named based on their colors.

(3) Sandra Ashley says:

Hello, I have 2 snakes. A red-tailed boa and an eastern milk snake. They are both females. The boa’s name is Hannah and the milk snake is Lillah. I love all animals and I have been working with all kinds of animals most of my life (including a camel trainer at the Columbus Zoo). I named my snakes after being with them for a few minutes. Their names just seem to come to me. I also had a banana king named Jewel. When I seen her I said “She is a jewel.” And that’s how it usually happens. I also want to mention that I have had a rose-hair tarantula named Rosie (of course). And I do know that people CAN be broke of their fears from on hand experience and just watching me with animals. I have done it many times with success. Well thank you for your time, Sandy Ashley

I currently own two ball pythons. The female’s name is Pusanne and the male is Messussa. Pusanne came from an episode of Drake & Josh(which my 7 yr old sister loves) and for some reason that came to me when I was looking at her for the first couple minutes after I brought her home. Messussa came from my friend Robby, who left me a message on my cell phone saying the venue his band was playing at had messusses(however you spell it), and for some reason I wanted to name my snake Messussa. I used to have a pueblan milk snake named Blossom, just because of her color. And I had a rat snake named Rio, because he’d been shipped from a breeding facility along the Rio Grande.

My albino gopher snake’s name is Edgar Winter. My coworker named him since he had another albino cousin named Johnny Winter.

(7) Harvey says:

These are my snakes’ names:

Reticulated Python - DJARUM
Reticulated Python - Ashtin
Reticulated Python - Cinder (I named her cinder because of the prominent bright yellow color)
Common Boa Constrictor - Sascha
Red-tailed Boa Constrictor - Kratos

Right now I adopted another Reticulated Python but I don’t have any name for it yet.
