Tarantulas as Pets

Though I am not a big fan of spiders generally, tarantulas fascinate me. I doubt I'll get one, as one of my sons has a spider phobia (or maybe being up close and personal with a beautiful tarantula would help him get over it?). They can actually be pretty decent pets: they are unique, quiet, and need little space, and keeping tarantulas as pets can make a fascinating hobby. Also, most species are not as dangerous as most people believe, though you still wouldn't want to experience a bite. Some tarantulas also have the ability to throw off really irritating and itchy hairs when they feel threatened. All the same, tarantulas aren't great for handling because they can be very easily (and seriously) injured by a small fall, like if they jump out of your hand. If you've ever thought about a pet tarantula, have a peek at Tarantulas as Pets, which includes general information about choosing and caring for a pet tarantula, as well as links to several species profiles and care sheets. How do you feel about pet tarantulas: fascinating pet or scary spider - vote our poll or leave a comment below.
