Keeping Hissing Cockroaches as Pets

Monday September 22, 2008
If you've seen shows with giant cockroaches, you've probably seen Madagascar hissing cockroaches or some of their relatives. Though I'm usually no fan of cockroaches (and I suppose these giants are used in T.V. and films to be ultra scary-looking), I think these huge hissing cockroaches are actually quite amazing and lovely -- not scary at all! Madagascar hissing cockroaches get their name from the hissing sound they make when they feel threatened. And as odd as it sounds, these huge cockroaches are actually pretty good pets. Just like other cockroaches, they are pretty hardy. They are certainly among the least demanding pets you can keep, and if you are interested in insects as pets, these guys may be ideal!

Hi Darryl

It’s just a matter of the nutritional content of head lettuce — it is quite low in nutrients so if they fill up on head lettuce they are missing out on more nutritious foods. It’s not harmful, really (it is actually a good source of water), it’s just not as nutritious as darker, leafy lettuce types.
