Pot Bellied Pigs as Pets
Sunday August 31, 2008
Pot bellied pigs became quite popular a few years ago, but I think their popularity waned a bit when people realized that the word "miniature" that was often added to the name was a relative term. They are miniature when compared typical farmed pigs, but can still weigh in well over a hundred pounds. Many people are surprised by how intelligent and affectionate pigs can be though!

The laws tend to be pretty restrictive there, and it also depends on the kind of pig you want and exactly where you live. I am not at all sure about licensing/permits there. Pot bellied pigs and other exotic pigs are not allowed in Australia, as far as I know. Some people do keep “miniature” pigs which are basically domestic pigs selectively bred for smaller size, but they are still quite large. But, your local town or council may have rules against keeping pigs, so you really have to call around locally to find out. Calling your local RSPCA might be a good start for advice on how to find out if they are legal where you live and if you need a permit or licence.
Here is a page about pet pigs that lists a couple of breeders in NSW. You could also email them for advice:
