Comment on the Proposed Changes to the Endangered Species Act
Thursday August 28, 2008
This may not be an exotic pets issue, but it is an issue near and dear to my heart. The US government is trying to pass modifications to the Endangered Species act that have been widely criticized by scientists and conservation groups. Doris Lin, About.com Guide to Animal Rights, has outlined a bit about the proposed changes and how to go about letting the government know what your thoughts are about these changes. The comment period on these proposed changes was only 30 days and ends September 15th, so don't delay if you want to make your feelings known (as usual, however, the process requires your personal information and promises to publish all comments, along with your full name and some other personal information on the regulations.gov website). I certainly don't agree with the changes and I was particularly disturbed that the changes seem to negate the protection recently granted to polar bears under the endangered species act by removing global warming as a factor to consider in protecting endangered species.
