Indoor Housing for Tortoises

Sunday September 30, 2007
I received a question recently about indoor housing for tortoises. Tortoises definitely seem to prefer living in outdoor pens so indoor housing represents a compromise, but there are instances when tortoises need to be housed indoors (for example hatchlings, or tortoises that are not healthy enough to hibernate, or when outdoor housing in impossible). There are a few things you can do to make your tortoise's indoor home more comfortable, though most ideal tortoise housing will require a bit of building skill. I've included some resources with ideas for homemade indoor tortoise housing in Housing Tortoises Indoors - Ideas for Building Custom Enclosures.
