Feeding Ferrets More Natural Diets

Many pet owners are worried and/or angry about what goes into pet food after all the pet food recalls earlier this year (one popular brand of ferret food was among the foods recalled). Many people have lost some degree of trust in processed pet food and interest has been growing in homemade diets, including raw diets. This seems to be true when it comes to ferrets as well, though interest has been growing for some time as we gain a better understanding of the ferret's dietary needs. There is some strong support for feeding a more natural diet for ferrets, be it feeding whole prey (which does not mean live prey) or raw meat and bones from the butcher shop. However, as with other feeding methods, there are pros and cons to these sorts of diets, as discussed in "Towards a More Natural Ferret Diet - Whole Prey and Raw Foods" and ultimately it comes down to what an owner really feels most comfortable feeding. Whichever way you choose to feed your ferrets, make sure you have a good understanding of their principles of picking a good ferret diet.
