Pet or Pest? Giant African Land Snails

Wednesday June 27, 2007
I received a suggestion that it is wrong of me to advocate keeping giant African land snails as pets, since they are "destructive, invasive, dangerous and illegal." I do point out in my profile of these giant land snails that they are potentially very serious agricultural pests and illegal in the US. Since there was a discovery a couple of years ago that land snails were in fact being kept in several schools in the US midwest (illegally), maybe my correspondent had a point. Here's my explanation of why I am having doubts about keeping my care sheet up: Giant African Land Snails: Potential Pet or Potent Pest?.
