Pet Food Recall Just Keeps on Growing

From Lianne McLeod, DVM, About.com Guide   April 20, 2007

Follow me on:

When news of the Menu Foods pet food recall first broke, I was already astounded at the magnitude of the recall. A month later, while media coverage has slowed considerably, the magnitude of this recall just continues to grow! Both the Veterinary Medicine and Cats sites (here at About.com) have been doing a great job of keeping up to date with news on the recall.

I'd heard earlier this week that some additional foods were recalled, but I just visited the Vet Medicine and Cats sites a few minutes ago and was dismayed to see there are even more foods added to the recall. I used to feel pretty safe, since my chronically allergic dogs haven't been eating any foods with any wheat, including wheat gluten. However, now some rice protein concentrate is suspected of also being contaminated...and the recall list now includes a Royal Canin food my dogs have eaten in the recent past (though not since mid January). Granted, a lot of the new recalls are precautionary, but it is still mind-boggling how many foods have been involved in this whole thing. I think the worst thing about all this is the theory that melamine was an intentional contaminant, rather than an accidental one, added to increase the apparent protein content of the ingredients involved. If you have dogs or cats (or use any dog or cat food to supplement your exotics), be sure to check out the latest updates on the Cats and the Veterinary Medicine sites.

Ok, rant over. I'm going to give my dogs a hug.

(1) Dog Food Recipes from Jolie :

I use to think that the food I was feeding my dog was safe but not anymore.
This “now some rice protein concentrate is suspected of also being contaminated” tells me that we have to be even more careful.
Pretty soon we wont be able to purchase
safe dog food.
