Pet Store Interventions

Thursday January 27, 2005
Have you ever gone into a pet store and seen animals kept under improper or even cruel conditions? Sure, not all pet stores are bad but I haven't seen very many that display their animals for sale in good conditions. I really like this advice on dealing with pet stores from Dennis Desmond of the Northern Virginia Reptile Rescue: Conducting a Pet Store Intervention. He points out since you are dealing with a business, approaching the situation from an economic and legal liablity standpoint can get a more agreeable response than confronting a store on welfare issues. This approach is far superior to my "head in the sand" approach of avoiding pet stores that sell animals or not looking at the animals in ones that do.
