Snakes in the News

Thursday April 8, 2004
A number of odd news tidbits this week featured large constricting snakes. In Kansas, a man who said he could no longer handle his 15 foot, 400 lb python, apparently killed the snake so authorities could not take it away (he's undergoing a mental evaluation). In New Jersey, a 10 foot reticulated python was found in a sack on the side of the road, likely dumped by an owner who realized they had taken on a snake they could not handle (the python has a new home now). And in Boston, police had to help pry a 7 foot burmese python off her owners arm and leg after a feeding went awry and neither the owner or her son could get the snake off (the owner realized her python was just being a python and convinced the police not to kill the snake). Lessons? Do not get a large constricting snake unless you are prepared for the responsibility and difficulties in handling large snakes. And, like the woman in Boston, have a second person around at feeding time, in case you need help! Information on Keeping Big Snakes as Pets:
